Comedian Ray Romano joined David Letterman on Monday to say goodbye to the man who helped launched his comedy career.
While holding back tears, Romano thanked the late-night host and explained to the audience that it was a spot on Letterman’s show that led to the creation of his hit sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond.”
Romano said he recently saw a performance on Letterman’s show of John Mayer singing “American Pie” by Don McLean, which immediately brought back memories of how much the show had meant to his life.
“I just saw him at that spot where my life changed, right there – my family’s life…” Romano said.
“Aw, son of a bitch, it’s happening,” he joked as he got emotional.
At the end of the interview, Letterman implored Romano to go back to the spot of the stage where he performed his first standup set, almost 20 years before, and soak in all the memories.
